CEREMONY of D-DAY, WORLD WAR 2, EISENHOWER-OBAMA, ABSENCE OF WORD “FREEDOM” (Issue 224)

On Saturday I watched the televised ceremonies about D-Day from Normandy, France. Listened to the speeches by President Obama, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and French President Sarkozy.

One day later on this Sunday morning, listening to the usual round of interviews and talk shows, much to do about the absence of the word “terrorist” or any reference to terrorism in the speeches.

For me there was a glaring absence of the word Freedom. The Canadian Prime Minister, Harper, did say, “…We need to teach freedom.” Obama used the word “free” once when he said, “Americans, British, Canadians knew what it meant to be Free.”

PROPERTY RIGHTS- SUPREME COURT- OBAMA NOMINEE (Issue 223)

There’s on-going news every day about President Obama’s Supreme Court nominee, Sonia Sotomayer, the Latino circuit court judge.

There’s a great deal of publicity over her remarks and rulings. There are those who criticize and condemn, then there are those who express approval and make excuses for her verbal remarks and court rulings. The two factions, pro and con, are having a field day on the radio, on television, newspapers and internet.

One item causing a lot of attention is her remark: “I would hope that a wise Latino woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life.”

SOTOMAYER-SUPREME COURT- VALUES & PRINCIPLES (Issue 222)

The current news is pretty much being dominated by the nomination of Sonia Sotomayer to the Supreme Court.  She’s appearing before Congress and will most likely be confirmed.

Regardless of whether one agrees or disagrees with her position on issues, politics will most likely triumph.  Keeping in mind, politicians are dedicated to two things, i.e., getting into office and staying in office.  In this connection, hearing all the hype about the size of the Latino vote in this country, those vetting her will be considering the back home vote at election time, which includes a segment of the Latino community.
