DEMO AND REPUB – TWO FISHY POLITICIANS SWIMMING AROUND IN MY FISH BOWL (Issue 866)

Yesterday my six year old grandchild, RJR, I sometimes call Little Bit or Half-Pint, knocked on my front door, holding a fish bowl. She had just acquired two fish for her pet and brought me one. I have named it Demo. The store ran out and my second one will arrive today, I’m naming Repub.

The fish bowl has a partition to separate the fish, because they fight with each other. They are called Betta fish and come from Thailand.

When I awakened this morning and saw the first one, Demo, floating on top of the water, I thought, Oh for Pete’s sake hope you didn’t expire on me last night. I thumped the bowl and he started swimming again.

I debated about names, and first thought I would name them Bonnie and Clyde, the two Western outlaws, because they like to fight. However, as I observed the fish, just swimming around, doing nothing, waiting to be fed, with a free lunch, expecting me to change the water, looking for something to disagree and fight with, then just floating doing nothing, playing dead in the water, it occurred to me that’s just like a Democrat and Republican politician, in Washington. I scratched the notion of naming them Bonnie and Clyde and decided to name them Demo and Repub.

I had not considered having any kind of pet, until my granddaughter decided to acquire two fish. I don’t need anything with a mouth to feed. All my squirrels, hanging out in my pecan trees, I can watch from my office window as I write my articles, are such a pleasure, because they are entrepreneurs who arise every morning and seek to find food and shelter for themselves, and do not depend upon me for anything.

The squirrels are so smart, they gather pecans and bury them in the ground to provide food during the winter months. Three of my very special ones are named Nutmeg Nellie, Dit Da, and Sagurue.

You see, these little bushy-tailed wild animals are smarter than human beings. They are not looking for a political government office to visit to apply for food stamps. They not only find food growing naturally to feed themselves, they are aware winter comes, and bury supplies of food for winter feeding.

And they are so smart my six year old grandson, Prince William, spent three days building a trap to catch one, sitting inside the front door with a string attatched to his trap, and the squirrels never fell for his plan, of free pecans inside the trap. Finally he gave up, and said to me, “You know Anna, squirrels don’t have a brain, just a thinking spot!!”

I view the squirrels as Freedom-loving entreprenurs, self-responsible and independent, and know how to live and survive with out dependency upon others.

Not so with these two little Betta fish. They have been captured from their native environment, where they lived and swam around free, now dependent upon me to feed for survival. Totally unaware I have named them from a political party, floating around doing nothing, looking for something to fight with.

I’m anxious to hear what RJR names her fish. She has a rather vivid imagination, very smart, already explaining to me how to care for them.
