It was not very long ago when the mainstream news media was so glaringly shouting out the “shock and awe” theme when the United States Government invaded Iraq.
At that time, Donald Rumsfeld was in charge, and praised for his genius relative to tactics and strategy. Later we hear this tactic of “shock and awe” was an idea hatched by noted economist, Milton Friedman, who said, “Only a crisis, ACTUAL or PERCEIVED, produces real change. When that crisis occurs, the actions that are taken depend upon the ideas lying around.”
Milton Friedman was an advisor to Presidents in this country as well as heads of government in other countries. His economic advice has been heeded by many governmental elected officials and employees.
For example, the Charter school system was hatched as a result of his economic theories. First implemented in New Orleans after the disaster of Katrina, it is now spreading across the country. It’s the same old system of thievery, under new management: A shock and awe tactic, under the heading of “Charter Schools.”
The latest implementation of the shock and awe doctrine comes in the staggering packages labeled, “bail-outs” and “stimulus.” While the American people are still reeling from one tall order to be paid for by them, another is proposed and pushed, while they are still in shock. Still asking what happened to the monies of the bailout package last fall, under the Republican Regime. No one seems to know – not even those in Congress officials who passed the bill to fork over billions.
This morning, the first thing I saw when I turned on the TV, was a rather upset new President. He appeared angry because the Senate is not moving fast enough to approve the next near trillion dollar package.
Fear is instilled into the minds of American citizens, by constant cry of crisis crisis crisis. Milton Friedman said, “Only a crisis, real or perceived, produces real change”. This is a statement so profound its worth repeating. All this hype coming out of Washington, a Chicken Little, “the sky is falling” pitch, is a manifestation of a created crisis, by those in this big hurry to “solve.”
“Why is that?” one might ask. It’s all part of a well organized plot to destroy that which is good and moral in this country. It’s the evil power of some to destroy individual freedom and private property rights of others. It is a situation which has been brewing and incubating a long time. A sinister force working through all the Socialist-minded elected representatives who have successfully convinced a large enough number that it’s the Free Market system that is the culprit. Their thinking is to just stamp out that wrong bothersome system, and we will be living in the Promised Land. It is a mindset of accomplishing by the shock and awe of crisis.
That old system of free enterprise, the voluntary exchange of goods and services, is outdated, and has been replaced by government mandated nationalism.
“Listen my children and you shall hear the midnight ride of Paul Revere.” Not “one if by land and two if by sea,” but, “one if by Bush and two if by Obama.” We will crush this enemy of the Free Market place once and for all. The sky is falling and we must do it today.
My favorite writer, Fredrich Bastiat said, “When plunder becomes a way of life for a group of men living together in society, they create for themselves, in the course of time a legal system that authorizes it and a moral code that glorifies it.”
Written almost 200 years ago by French economist, Bastiat, in his book, “The Law,” how fitting and timely it is today. This moral code in Washington, of taking from the haves, to give to the have nots, has now become an active plan of taking from everyone to give to the few which already have plenty. With a plea of urgency, saturating the airways 24-7, the powers at be are in high gear with the “Shock and Awe” strategy.
