Past Presidents, Present President-Elect & Why McCain Lost (Issue 123)

Here we are in the middle of all of this magnificent fall weather. Never have I seen the trees and foliage more beautiful. It’s as though some unseen hand has taken a broad brush and painted the entire area like a canvas, with such a variety of colors and beauty.

In this post-election time, I de-brief myself by playing with Prince William in the back yard, sitting and starring at the fall foliage, watching the squirrels gather nuts while he hits golf balls. I started teaching him golf at two-years-old. Now at three, he can tee up the ball and knock it across the back fence. When he does, yells, “I knocked it to kingdom come.” I know no greater joy than observing the pride a small child enjoys when he accomplishes something new each day of his life, the spontaneity of sheer joy the child experiences with each thing he does that is a new experience. I feel so privileged to share some of these times with my grandchildren.

The Desiderata Found In 1690 In An Old Baltimore Church (Issue 122)

This Sunday morning, just a few days after the historic Presidential campaign and election, I listen to the talk shows, news analysts, preachers and political pundits. After all of the anger, resentment, name-calling and mud slinging, very suddenly, there seems to be a complete change in the tone of many speaking out, yet more of the same from some.

It’s a bit strange and disarming. For example, I listened to Chris Matthews interviewing Dan Rather, the noted news anchor, who gave his opinion about  Obama, the President-Elect, saying, “I think he will govern from the middle, the same way he ran his campaign.” Wow! I thought, where have you been? Then realized he has been there, a part of the news media all the time.

The World Loves A Winner And A Parade (Issue 119)

The Presidential Race is over. Twenty-one months of around the clock political news domination has ended. There were days, my friends, I thought it would never end.

The entire world loves two things and two things only, and that’s a winner and a parade. I stayed up last night and listened to the results until I heard that it looked like Florida, Pennsylvania and Ohio were going for Obama. I thought to myself, I might as well go to bed and wake up to a new African American President-Elect.  Sure enough, I woke up at 3 a.m., turned on the TV and the first thing I heard was mention of Barack Obama as the President-Elect, then news of more than 100,000 people in Grant Park, Illinois, to hear his speech.

Barack Obama can definitely draw a crowd and make an eloquent speech. He most certainly generated a lot of enthusiasm over his campaign and inspired a lot of hope in a generation of Americans. Now the question is, what is he going to deliver?

Acorn Politicians Gone Nuts (Issue 104)

I listened to the second debate between presidential candidates John McCain and Barack Obama. In previous articles, I have mentioned how boring all the rhetoric is. This one went beyond that.

They babbled on and on ad nausea. Both went from the ridiculous to the sublime in stretching the truth, made promises they have no intention of keeping, waltzed around the podium fencing with the audience questions, fumbling and avoiding answering the questions asked. The moderator, Tom Brokaw, gave the worst performance I have heard from any moderator in any former debates.
