Birds of a Feather Flock Together—Hillary & Obama (Issue 133)

The news media cycle is working overtime with all the buzz and spin over President-Elect Obama’s appointments.

During his campaign he repetitiously said, “change we can believe in” and spoke of how he was going to “change the culture” in Washington. The first thing he did was appoint someone right down the street from the White House and changed his job by moving him in the White House.

Then he quickly began filling slots with all those who had been in Bill Clinton’s regime as President—all Clinton’s cabinet members, staffers and deputies like Bill Richardson, Rahm Emanuel, Tom Dashle, Eric Holder, and topping the list is Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State.

Boiled Watermelon (Issue 43)

Today is the Pennsylvania primary with the two top democratic contenders duking it out over the airways to see which will be the nominee to face off with republican nominee John McCain.

McCain is traveling around making speeches waiting to see who his opponent will be. His speeches are boring and he would probably be better off saying very little, saving his energy to face off with Hillary or Obama.

On the corner of one of the pages, it always highlighted a section with quotes titled “bits and pieces.” I still have a copy of one of those quotes even after all these years. It has yellowed with time and I can hardly read it, but here is what it said:

Dirty Politics (Issue 28)

In this election year, the rhetoric and dirty politics is in high gear. Like a ping-pong game, the accusations are slinging back and forth between the three major candidates.

Several years ago, there was a great Washington news correspondent named Jack Anderson who said, “I don’t cover the news. I uncover it.” I wish he was around today because there is so much covered up with spin, and so much to be uncovered, we are just beginning to hear about who’s buried what about whom, and why.

When this political campaign began over a year ago, I thought we were in a war of ideas. I was mistaken. It’s not on that level. No one seems to have any rational ideas about how to solve or resolve anything.
