Freedom: What It Is and What It Is Not (Issue 142)

During the long political campaign for a new president of this country, I became a sort of news junkie listening to all of the speeches, which began with dozens of candidates seeking the office of power.

I kept listening to hear one of them talk about freedom, but no one ever did, except one. And that was Sara Palin, the governor of Alaska, running on the Republican ticket for Vice President. She did speak of her love of freedom and was the only one I heard mention it. After awhile, I noticed the absence of any mention of the word, and concluded it had become a taboo word.

After concluding it has become unfashionable to talk about it, I realized there’s a lot of confusion about its meaning. In my blog articles, I write more about the meaning of freedom than any other subject. I write about what it is. In this article, I will write about what it is not.

First off, freedom is not a government grant. It’s a state of being that cannot be legislated by politicians. It is a gift granted to us as an inalienable right by our creator.

It is not a commodity that can be bought and sold.

It is not a privilege . . . a privilege being a special or peculiar benefit, favor or advantage granted to some by other humans, but not to all. A privilege can be a civil or political grant, favoring some and excluding others. Freedom is not exclusive.

The World Loves A Winner And A Parade (Issue 119)

The Presidential Race is over. Twenty-one months of around the clock political news domination has ended. There were days, my friends, I thought it would never end.

The entire world loves two things and two things only, and that’s a winner and a parade. I stayed up last night and listened to the results until I heard that it looked like Florida, Pennsylvania and Ohio were going for Obama. I thought to myself, I might as well go to bed and wake up to a new African American President-Elect.  Sure enough, I woke up at 3 a.m., turned on the TV and the first thing I heard was mention of Barack Obama as the President-Elect, then news of more than 100,000 people in Grant Park, Illinois, to hear his speech.

Barack Obama can definitely draw a crowd and make an eloquent speech. He most certainly generated a lot of enthusiasm over his campaign and inspired a lot of hope in a generation of Americans. Now the question is, what is he going to deliver?

Vote, Gloat Or Float Your Boat (Issue 118)

I moved to this little North Georgia town, nestled at the foothill of The Blue Ridge Mountains just two years ago. I know very few people here and seldom go any place because I no longer drive. I have a perfect driving record over 50 years, but the State of Georgia cancelled my driver’s license because it made a typographical error  on my birth date, which did not match my social security records. Therefore, it cancelled my driver’s license two years ago.

I will be writing an article about that a bit later, plus another article describing how the local Marshall’s office hounded me for months here.

Because of these events, in addition to others, I have stayed home most of the time during the past two years. And in the past seven months, spent a lot of time writing. However, the past three days I’ve been in involved in a rummage sale, which is sort of like a yard sale but inside my home. As a result, I have met many of the “local folks,” some rather charming.

Redistribution Of Wealth By Restaurant Customer (Issue 117)

In my eight decades of listening to many political campaigns, I have never heard anything as nasty and vicious as this one. It seem as though all of a sudden the anger and frustration of the citizens in this country with reference to what is happening to our beloved country and personal Freedom, is at an all time high.

It seems to me all the talk about “redistribution of wealth” struck a nerve like nothing else has. A friend of mine out of state sent me a story he read about how one lady who was going for lunch in a restaurant decided to embark on an unscientific experiment of “wealth redistribution.” It’s a classic story and an interesting one.
