Vote, Gloat Or Float Your Boat (Issue 118)

I moved to this little North Georgia town, nestled at the foothill of The Blue Ridge Mountains just two years ago. I know very few people here and seldom go any place because I no longer drive. I have a perfect driving record over 50 years, but the State of Georgia cancelled my driver’s license because it made a typographical error  on my birth date, which did not match my social security records. Therefore, it cancelled my driver’s license two years ago.

I will be writing an article about that a bit later, plus another article describing how the local Marshall’s office hounded me for months here.

Because of these events, in addition to others, I have stayed home most of the time during the past two years. And in the past seven months, spent a lot of time writing. However, the past three days I’ve been in involved in a rummage sale, which is sort of like a yard sale but inside my home. As a result, I have met many of the “local folks,” some rather charming.

I ran an ad in the Gainesville Times, which covers a large area and as a result, people came from the surrounding communities like Gilsville, Lula, Rabbit-Town, Hiwasse, and it is those from these kinds of areas who have the sweet charming southern attitudes. A “how’s your mama and ‘em?” and “You all come back now, ya hear” personalities. One lady near Murrayville is going to bring me a pot of fresh growing sage herbs that I use in cornbread dressing. She makes her own soap, the old timely way.

The same week I started my sale, an article about my blogging site appeared in the Gainesville Times—a large picture and write-up that covered almost half of a page. Plus, because of that article, I got a call from “The Tonight Show” with Jay Leno in the middle of my sale, to interview me about the possibility of being on his show in Los Angeles.

I decided to perform a little experiment and ask those who came if they took the Gainesville Times, and if they read the article/, The majority saw the article, With a surprise question, “Oh was that you”? Then I received a few questions about voting..Heres a sampling, one man asked, “Have you voted’?  No I havent, i replied,  “are you going to vote,”/  he asked” My question back to him, ” do you want me to go to the poll precinct and place my stamp of approval on another individual to have the power to take your property, {money}?  I!m a registered voter and I could do that, but do you expect me to do that?” Well,” he said, “I never thought about it that way, I always considered it my, “duty’ to vote’. To that I replied, ” sir I felt the same way, many years back until I began studying what Freedom means, then comparing the concept of Freedom to what is actually happening in this country I love” He shook his head in dis-belief, and repeated, ‘I just never thought about it that way before”

Then I reminded him of the story of Hitler, towards the end of his regime when the people were  finally angered and resentful of his totaliarian socialism, they decided to stay home and not vote, however, Hitler rounded them up in large trucks with armed guards and took them to the polls to vote. At that point did they vote out of a sense of duty?

At that point this country gentleman, bought a pair of work gloves, thanked me and left.

That evening watching television, I heard some say,  “Its your duty To go and vote”. A remark I have heard many times in my life and at one time believed it. But my extensive journey to discover the meaning of Freedom reveals other=wise. No, it is not a duty, it is a government granted priviledge given to some but not all. Can a 17 year old vote? If you have  been convicted of a crime, and served time can you vote? Can the un-born, who will be ruled by majority vote have any say so about who placed the thousands of rules, polices and edicts of income tax over his life when he arrives? Labeling the act “a duty” sounds rather absurd and rediculous when one thinks about it..And simply not true, that its a “duty’
